Our topic this half-term is Coal Mining where we will descend into the depths of Britain’s coal mines and discover how coal miners brought the precious coal up to the surface that was needed to power industry! We’ll also find out about the many dangers of mining, the importance of coal during the Industrial Revolution, the process of the ‘no choice’ lottery and the miners’ strikes. We will also use maps to locate coal mines around the UK and in our local area.
Our science topic this half-term is 'What changes can materials go through?" and we will explore the changes that materials go through. We will look at dissolving, reversible and non-reversible changes, separating materials and grouping materials based on their properties. This topic will give children the opportunity to work scientifically by making predictions, recording results, writing conclusions and creating graphs to display data.
I am also excited to announce that we will be attending the biannual Safety Zone Trip on Wednesday 25th September from 12:45-3pm. Information about this will be sent out at the end of this week.
Furthermore, as our topic this half-term is all about coal mining, we will be visiting the National Coal Mining Museum on Thursday 10th October. This will be an excellent opportunity for the children to deepen their knowledge about our topic. More information about this will be sent out next week.
PE Kit:
Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school for every PE lesson. Correct PE kit is as follows:
- A white round necked t-shirt or any other plain white t-shirt
- Burgundy shorts (no logos)
- Appropriate footwear - trainers or plimsolls
- A plain, dark-coloured tracksuit or leggings for the colder months
Our PE days this half-term are Monday and Tuesday. Forest Schools will also take place on a Tuesday afternoon.
More information about Year 5 and Base Three will be shared at the base meeting on 12th September at 4:45pm.
