Black History Month is a special time in October when we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people throughout history. It’s an opportunity to learn about important figures, events, and cultural heritage that have shaped our world. By exploring stories of resilience, creativity, and leadership, we can better understand and appreciate the rich diversity that makes our communities stronger. Let’s take this month to honour the past, celebrate the present, and inspire a brighter future for everyone.

The children heard about Black History Month in assembly (see below)  and their teachers will be following up in class.

At Crossdale we follow ‘Jigsaw’, the Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum. Throughout the year, Jigsaw helps children develop emotional literacy, build self-esteem, and gain a positive and healthy understanding of themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. Your children may have talked to you about Jigsaw Friends and Calm Me time.

After half-term, every year group at Crossdale will cover the Changing Me unit in Jigsaw, which includes 2 or 3 lessons to help children understand the changes puberty brings and how human reproduction happens. Younger year groups do not address these issues directly and explicitly; instead, they focus on learning information that prepares them for later years. The lessons in Years 5 and 6 discuss more detailed information regarding puberty and human reproduction.

These lessons are classed as sex education and parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE. Before granting such a request to withdraw we would encourage you to talk to us about your worries or concerns so that you fully understand the nature and purpose of the curriculum as well as the benefits of receiving this important education.

• Babies and Parenting
• Puberty and Menstruation

If children raise issues we feel are inappropriate for their year group, we will contact you so you can discuss them in a way you feel is appropriate. We strongly encourage you to talk to your child after the lessons. This will support their learning and give them an opportunity to ask further questions.
