Bubble Science!

 

As part of our science lesson this afternoon, we investigated the properties of bubbles and found out that they are a unique and interesting mixture of liquid and gas. We explored why bubbles pop and what we can do to keep them around for a little longer, for example by blowing them onto a damp surface. Can you find any other ways? We then went outside to see how the heat from the sun affected them. Next, we explored how adding certain solid ingredients to the mixture, such as sugar or cornflour, could affect the strength of the bubble. We managed to form some pretty tough bubbles! 

We also recorded our bubbles moving around whilst sharing some explanations and hypotheses that we had generated from our adventures in bubble science. I have attached the video clips here so that you can see and hear some of the children's ideas.

 

 

 

You may want to investigate some bubble science yourself at home over the weekend - there are plenty of different recipes online to test to make your own bubble fluid. If you like photography, see if you can use a video editor to capture a bubble popping in slow motion - it's a pretty amazing sight! You could also have a go at writing a story about someone / something that became trapped in a bubble. Where do they go? What do they see? How did they get trapped there in the first place?

There are lots of possibilities for a fun time with bubbles - enjoy exploring!
